Term 2 Week 5 Notices

Tālofa lava!  This week is Samoa Language week.

Samoa Language Week celebrates the identity, language, and culture of students from Samoa and students whose families are from Samoa.  Throughout the week there will be activities children can participate in during class time as well as lunch breaks.

Why not try learning some words or phrases to use at home this week…

  • Tālofa lava: Hello (formal)

  • Mālō le soifua: Hello/Good health

  • ‘O ā mai 'oe? How are you? (to one person only)

  • Manuia fa‘afetai: Good, thank you

  • Manuia le aso: Have a great day

  • Tōfā soifua: Good bye (formal)

Our Learning

This week sees our morning play change to a different curriculum area.  Over the next two weeks, children will have the opportunity to develop their skills as scientists.  Teachers will be supporting the children to use the science capabilities such as observing, inferring, and gathering data while conducting simple science experiments.

We continue to be impressed with the perseverance of all our children in their reading and writing.  It is always a pleasure to see children trying their best and working hard to achieve their own personal learning goals.

This term, in maths, we continue to develop our knowledge around number.  We will also be looking at measurement which includes volume, length as well as time (days of the week, months of the year).  Measurement is a wonderful learning area where children are able to use their knowledge of number to solve real-life problems.

Ko Hāta Maria Icon

We are incredibly lucky to have the icon Ko Hāta Maria - Holy Mary in our parish.  All children in Kākano will visit and learn about this beautiful icon during the week.

Pentecost Mass

This Friday, at 9am, Kākano children will be running our whole school Mass.  All families are welcome to join us in the church.  It will be great to have our community celebrate Mass with us again. Pentecost is a special time in our church and is known as the Birthday of the Church.  Our learning in RE this week will be about Pentecost and the gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit.

The week ahead

Monday: Gym at lunchtime - girls bring a change of clothes

Tuesday: Book Club at lunchtime

Wednesday: Kākano children visit the icon (11:15 - 11:45)

Friday: Pentecost Mass (9am in the Church) / Sausage Sizzle & Juicies $1.50 each / Rollerskating club at lunchtime. Library Day - bring your books back so you can choose new ones.

Teacher Only Day

Tuesday 7th June is a Teacher Only Day. The Teachers at St Mary’s will be joining John Paul College for this day’s focus of ‘Matariki’. There will be no school for children on this day. If you require childcare you can contact Maryanne Rolling on 0211 215599.

Enjoy your Sunday evening and I look forward to seeing the lovely children of Kākano 7 in the morning.

Going To The Library

Kākano 7 loves going to the library. Every Friday we go over to change our books and the children who haven't brought their books back choose new books for our class to read. They love talking to Maria the librarian and she loves chatting to the children. They are learning the routines of the library and I am impressed with how responsible they all are.

Term 2 Week 4 Notices

We had a busy day on Friday making bird feeders which the children found quite fun to make. We had to let the seed mixture set so we couldn't quite finish them on Friday.  Hopefully, we will be able to finish them tomorrow morning and I will post some photos.

Pink Shirt Day was a great success - thanks for supporting this.  We celebrate diversity in all forms and we want our school to be safe, supportive, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone.

Fantail Fantail

Last week we read the book Fantail, Fantail together.  The children really loved reading this book and were excited to take it home to read.  The children love the catchy rhythm and repetition in these stories.  We made fantails for our art and lots of us learned a new skill of folding paper to make a fan for the fantail's wings.  It was quite tricky!!

Term 2 Week 3 Notices

Thanks so much to all our parents, caregivers, and students who came to our 3-way conferences this week. It was great to catch up with you all and discuss your child's progress and next steps.

School Photos

On Monday morning (tomorrow) we have our school photos. Kākano classes are up first so there will be little chance to get dirty. We will make sure all our tamariki are looking just right for the photos. Boys are to have their woollen jerseys on and girls are to wear their skivvy and tunic with long hair tied back. Please can you ensure your child’s jersey is named in case they take them off!

Structured Literacy Information Session

Are you curious about the new approach to spelling and reading taking place at school? You may have learnt a little about this at your parent conference this week.

Come along and learn about the structured literacy approach, what this means for your child and how you can support their learning at home.

Our consultant, Marion Kirby from Learning Matters will give you a brief overview of how the brain learns to read - you may learn a thing or two yourself!

See you upstairs in the Staffroom at 3pm this  Wednesday the 18th of May. Tea, Coffee and snacks provided.

There are lots of creative children in our class who enjoy making, creating, and learning through play.
